Kingston, NY October 4, 2001: TheaterSounds Hudson Valley Playreading Series presents NOT IN MY BACKYARD, a collection of explorations relating to the events of September 11. The reading will take place on Saturday, October 20, at 8pm at the Community Center at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills, 320 Sawkill Rd, Kingston.
It is the mission of TheaterSounds to offer new plays and old favorites read by professional actors for the audiences of this community. Therefore, on October 20, plays will be the forum for exploring the unfathomable events of September 11, 2001.
Do we really need theater at this time? Theater professionals across the land are grappling with this question, and we, like many of them, understand that theater has historically served as a valve to the pressures of society. We believe that theater shows us who we are, and that it is most important now when we are confronted with the magnitude of these events.
For the October 20th reading, TheaterSounds has invited playwrights to submit plays reflecting their responses to terrorism and political unrest. The readings will be followed by audience discussion with the playwrights and actors.
"In the artist events like those of Tuesday morning bring about a meeting of universal emotions and an
individual will to unearth them, expose them, understand them and accept, if not outlast, them." -- Bruce Willis, The New York Times, 9/13/01
In future, we hope to have you with us to share, to laugh, to cry, to be disturbed, to be comforted, to dream, to imagine......
